The Storyline of Nosferatu |
Warning! This synopsis contains spoilersThomas Hutter and his wife Ellen live in a little village named Wisborg (adapted from real life Wismar) where he works in real estate. His employer Knock comes to ask him to travel to visit a Count Orlok in the far off Transylvania to sell the property right across from Hutter's own home. Hutter travels to meet the Count in his castle, and fins the local townspeople much frightened by Orlok. They try to discourage him from going to the castle and refuse to cross the bridge to deliver him to the castle door. Orlok's own coachmen is there to give him a ride. After arriving at the castle he has dinner with Orlok and cuts himself after beign startled by bells. Orlok tries to suck the wound before being repelled by a cross hanging around Hutter's neck. Hutter falls asleep and awakes with a set of punctures on his neck. Orlok joins him and finalizes the paperwork After finding The Book of the Vampires in his luggage, places there by the locals no doubt, he begins to speculate that Orlok is Nosferatu and hides in his bedroom. Orlok comes in anyway and a nightmarish screen linking Hutter and Orlok with the dreaming Ellen ensues with Ellen's screams for Hutter's safety repelling Orlok. The next day Hutter explores the castle, finding Orlok sleeping in a coffin in the basement.He runs to his room where he watches the coffins being loaded onto a coach along with the rats which inhabit them as well. They are then moved to a boat for their trip back to Hutter's town. Meanwhile Knock has been institutionalized and catches flies to eat. He reads a paper with news of the rat plague and escapes. Orlok takes up residence across the street from Huttter and his wife and the rats are blamed for the plague and there are many deaths. Ellen finds The Book of Vampires and decides the only solution is to sacrifice herself.She allows Orlok to drink her blood until cocks crow when Orlok realizes he's out too late. As he tries to escape the sunlight he comes across the open window and disappears in a puff of smoke. Hutter arrives with the doctor but is too late.
